A properly designed solar PV system generates electricity for more than 25 years — cutting what you buy from the grid and shielding you from future price rises. Despite the reputation, Wales has strong year-round generating potential.

What you get back depends heavily on your export rate — and the best rates come with a condition the industry tends not to mention:
Most export tariffs open to everyone pay between 1p and 6p. This is the realistic case if you don’t want to change energy supplier.
Octopus, British Gas, OVO, EDF, E.ON Next and ScottishPower all pay more for your exports if you also buy your electricity from them. Worth comparing against their import prices before you switch.
How we worked this out — every assumption and source
- System size: 4.5 kWp, the average domestic system stated by Energy Saving Trust (21 July 2026).
- Installed cost: £7,400, from a mean of £1,640.75 per kW for 4–10 kW installations in Wales — DESNZ Solar PV cost data (28 May 2026), drawn from 22,532 Welsh installations in the MCS database. Wales was the cheapest region in Great Britain that year.
- Generation: modelled at Carmarthen, south-facing at 35° with no shading, using the European Commission's PVGIS tool (v5.2, SARAH2) with 20% system losses. East- or west-facing roofs generate roughly 15–20% less.
- Self-consumption: 22%, calculated per MCS MGD 003 Issue 2.0 (1 April 2022) using the prescribed default occupancy pattern and 3,500 kWh annual household use. That leaves 78% exported. A home occupied all day would be nearer 28%; empty all day, nearer 15%.
- Electricity price: 26.33p per kWh including VAT — the Ofgem price cap for South Wales, Direct Debit, 1 July to 30 September 2026. The cap changes quarterly.
- Export rates: verified on suppliers' own tariff pages on 7 August 2026. Rates open to any customer ranged from 1p to 6p; the 12–15p rates all require you to buy your import electricity from that same supplier. Ofgem sets no minimum export rate, and rates have been falling — Octopus cut its export rate from 15p to 12p in March 2026.
- Higher rates of 15p–25p exist but are only offered where that supplier carried out the installation. As an independent installer we cannot get you those, and we’d rather say so than quote a number you can’t have.
- These are first-year figures. Over time panel output declines by roughly 0.5% a year, and an inverter typically needs replacing around year 12 — but electricity prices have historically risen, which works the other way.
- Excluded: energy price inflation, finance costs, scaffolding or roof repairs, and any extra benefit from an EV, heat pump, immersion diverter or battery — all of which would raise self-consumption and improve the return.

The grant is a contribution towards the installation, not the full cost — in most cases you’ll still pay a share. What that comes to depends on your property:
